State to monitor air in Carlisle

by T.W. Burger

As local municipalities begin to figure out ordinances to reduce emissions from diesel engines in the region, the Carlisle-based Clean Air Board has announced a new state project to monitor air quality.

The CAB and the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection announced Monday that an electronic air-monitoring device will be installed soon on the western end of Carlisle to measure the amount of fine particle pollution that is getting into the air in the area.

The announcement follows bad environmental news for the region. Late last month, the Carlisle Area Health and Wellness Foundation and the Philadelphia-based Clean Air Council announced that the air in Carlisle is worse than the air in 96 percent of communities around the U.S.
