Despite anti-idling legislation that has been in place for five months to impose idling limits statewide on large trucks, members of the Clean Air Board of Central Pennsylvania say it’s still too early to measure how our area has benefited.

“It may be too soon to tell,” said Thomas Au, board member and former assistant chief counsel for the state Department of Environmental Protection. “The full effect of the law won’t kick in for another year, when all rest area idling is prohibited.”

Under the state law, which took effect Feb. 9, diesel-powered vehicles weighing more than 10,000 pounds are limited to idling for no more than five minutes per hour. Violators face fines of between $150 and $300.
